A Simple Trick for Pre-Performance Anxiety

Figuring out how to manage pre-performance nerves is important to conquering that anxiety before a recital or performance! Listening to music before a show, but more specifically, listening to bird songs, can help reduce some nerves! A study was conducted in 2022 to really see if there was any connection between the presence of birds singing and the participants’ mood. Noa Kageyama says "there was a significant difference in their mental wellbeing ratings when they reported being able to see or hear birds at that moment. Additionally, this boost in mental well-being tended to last for a decent bit of time... So, it’s not like the effect faded as soon as they were out of earshot of birds."

A similar study found that "after just six minutes of listening to bird sounds, there was a significant reduction in the participants’ anxiety levels." So, if you feel anxiety beginning to build up before a big show, try to put in some headphones and listen to bird sounds; even better, go outside to hear them if you can!
