Have you ever sat and practiced the same passage over and over, only to end up frustrated that you haven't learned to correct the mistake you can't pass? Researchers have studied the "inter-trial interval", suggesting that less learning happened during the time your muscles are moving, and deeper learning might take place in the time between practice attempts.
During the study, one group received a 1-second pause between attempts, while others received 5, 10, 15, 20, or 40 seconds. Participants who received only a 1-second pause consistently performed worse and were less accurate. The researchers believed that a 1-second break wasn't enough time to process information from previous attempts and get it into long-term memory.
